Comment:
I have never attended a reunion before. I am expecting to enjoy being with people I was friendly with at Senn and getting acquainted with people that weren’t in my circle back then.

My Life Since Senn ...:
I graduated from the U of I with a BS in electrical engineering and moved to Minnesota to work for Univac designing computer based defensive weapons systems for the Navy. I was peripherally involved with the Gemini and Apollo spacecraft guidance systems. My wife Ellie and I returned to Chicago where I continued to develop software and design systems including the first UPC cash register for grocery stores, an early hard disk subsystem for the PC and software for international bank to bank funds transfers. I was a VP of Software Development when I tired of corporate America. I started my own company and have been a software consultant for the past 16 years. My work-from-home lifestyle allows me to stay up late, sleep late, and do non-work activities during the day. I love the work I do (so why retire?). My two biggest passions (other than Ellie) are self discovery, photography and travel. I have only travelled in 19 countries but have been to many of them multiple times. My self discovery was enhanced by being involved in marriage encounter, est, group therapy and various seminars. Having a wife who is a psychotherapist is also great for learning more about myself. I enjoy taking photos but also enjoy the post processing phase using tools like Photoshop to enhance a picture and exercise the creative potential of my right brain. |

My Life Since Senn ...:
Most of my life (30 years) was spent working - selling office furniture and office design. I was married for 35 years, widowed in 2005. Met a wonderful gentleman named Bob Mathis - I'll be bringing him to the reunion. Love golf - not good at it but still love it; dining out; long walks - when my back's okay; theatre, movies, dancing; my dog "Abbie". We live six months in Florida and six months in Connecticut. |

My Life Since Senn ...:
I attended the University of Illinois, earning degrees in both Architecture and Architectural Engineering and then went to the University of Michigan for Master Degrees in Architecture and in Natural Resources and Planning. I am a member of the American Institute of Architects and was elected as a “Fellow” in the American Society of Landscape Architects after serving as national vice president. I was fortunate enough to fulfill my dream, since Boone School days, of becoming an architect. The firm I founded in 1971, THALDEN • BOYD • EMERY ARCHITECTS, has offices in St. Louis, Tulsa and Las Vegas. We specialize in the design of casinos, hotels and resorts throughout the U.S. and internationally. The firm ranks amongst the “Largest Hospitality Design Firms in the U.S.” Projects include the $250 million Buffalo Thunder Resort in Santa Fe, NM., the $200 million Casino Morongo Resort in Palm Springs, CA., the Hard Rock Casino Resort in Tulsa, OK., the theming of the Venetian Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, and the National Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum in St. Louis. Closer to Chicago, I was the architect for the Potawatomi Casino in Milwaukee and the Ho Chunk Casino Resort in Wisconsin Dells. (www.thaldenboyd.com) I enjoy writing feature articles for professional magazines and speaking at conferences. My firm has been given numerous awards and honors, and my accomplishments have been recognized in “Who\'s Who in America,” and “Who\'s Who in the World.” In 2014 I retired and live in Ashland, Oregon with my wife Kathryn when we are not traveling. |

My Life Since Senn ...:
After graduation, I first attended Indiana University and then finished at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana with a BS in Education. Later I earned an MS Ed. in Computers/Instructional Technology from Northern Illinois University. I taught for 39 years in the Chicago Public Schools' primary grades' the first 4 yrs. in the inner city at Schley Elementary and the next 35 yrs. at Swift Elementary where I had attended myself from Kindergarten through 8th grade. (At first it was kind of weird being back on the other side of the desk and among teachers who I personally had had.) I retired in 2004, but then returned in 2005 to work one day a week as a Computer Assistant at Bell Elementary. Funding for my position may be cut for next year, so maybe then I will finally fully retire for good!...Or not... From reading the profiles, I see that a number of my Senn classmates also chose teaching or have mates who were teachers, so you know the stresses and challenges of this profession. But, I hope you also found, as I did, the joys and rewards, too. (Very few go into it for the money, especially if you work in the Chicago Public Schools.) I miss the interaction with the children and my fellow teachers and staff, but definitely not all the paperwork! I consider myself blessed to have been able to work with exceptional staffs at all 3 of those schools and I still maintain friendships with several of those teachers. I received two computer grants in 1983 and 1984 and thus began my love for computers and what they can do. Back then we used those huge floppies and even cassette tapes! Over the years, I gradually accumulated 17 Apple II's and 4 Macs in the back of my crowded classroom. At Swift, I pioneered integrating technology into the curriculum. My second passion was downhill skiing. During the 70's and 80's I skied a lot in Michigan, Wisconsin, and out West, took flying lessons, led a Junior Girl Scout troop, did TM and EST, became a vegetarian, sold insurance part-time, and dabbled in multi-level marketing (the latter two hoping to find an income source once I retired, but didn't find either satisfying enough to continue. I have traveled and cruised in Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean, and the USA (thanks to CPS vacation time. I enjoy going to movies, the theater and dance series, sudoku and other brain-teasers, getting together with friends, and exploring the wonders of modern technology; and since retiring, I have more time to do these things. I also love having the luxury of sleeping in late or staying up all night finishing a book that I just can't put down (thanks or no thanks to recently getting a Kindle. I now also have more time to devote to my third passion: writing. I feel fortunate to have arrived at retirement in good health and I'm enjoying it to the fullest...most days. I won't be able to attend the reunion, so I'm glad to have been able to catch up a bit through reading the profiles. Thank you to the reunion committee for putting together this wonderful site and for all your time and efforts in planning the reunion. It's hard to believe it's been 50 years already! |
