Life after Senn began with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Chicago. My favorite weekend was spent as host for New York artist Louise Nevelson when she was on campus as headliner for the Festival of the Arts, then in its infancy.
My career wound its way through marketing, advertising, public relations, and fundraising. Stints included public relations firms, an all-woman marketing and design firm, advertising agencies, a national student loan provider, and finally, Indiana's largest law firm. Also spent several years as a free-lance newspaper writer. Lived in Indianapolis nearly three decades and recently moved back to Illinois -- where politics are so much more exciting. The climax of my volunteer life was four years as chair of a speaker series with nationally prominent names, greeting them at the airport and digging up background tidbits for my introductions. I am delighted to have family minutes rather than hours away. And it has been most pleasant to reconnect with friends and favorite haunts. |

1960 was a very eventful year for me. In February I met my future husband, Ted Darch. In May we got engaged, in June I graduated, and in December we got married. We have two wonderful daughters. Maxine is vice-president of a market research firm in Chicago. She is married, and has 3 grown step-children. Susan is a full-time wife and mother of two boys, and has written 2 books, which she is hoping will be published. So if anybody knows anybody in this field, all help is welcome. After being home with my girls for ten years, I went to work for a manufacturing company in Skokie and stayed for 31 years. We did a great deal of traveling. I retired in April, 2002, and I love it. We have a home in Wellington, Florida, where we like to visit several times during the year. I enjoy playing Mah Jongg and spending time with my family, particularly my 2 grandsons, Austin, 17, and Logan, 12. My best friend from high school, Lorna Galpin Schufeldt, is still my best friend today, and we both cherish this.

It's always easier to ask forgiveness than permission.
A bachelor's and master's degree from the U of I led to a 35 year career at Arthur Andersen. A year before taking early retirement, I applied to the Univ of Chicago and went on to earn a master's degree in Jewish Studies. A love of research and a history of public speaking led to a few years of lecturing in American Jewish History and then, almost by accident, a couple of years of lecturing on Old-Time-Radio.
Susie (Merlander) and I are married 42 years with two daughters. One is a rabbi and the other left a career for an advanced degree at Northwestern and is now back in the job market. Susie has had two careers -- high school teacher and administrator for a national adult Jewish education program.
I've served on the national board of the Union for Reform Judaism, the Cincinnati board of the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, and as president of the Board of Jewish Education of Metropolitan Chicago.
We love to travel. Someday, my play script will see the light of day.

Greet each day with enthusiasm!
After graduation, I obtained my degree in accounting in 1964 and married my first wife, Edie Rachlin the same year. I worked as an accountant and corporate controller in the Chicago area for the next 20 years. I left the accounting profession to find a new career and ended up starting my own insurance agency in the Chicago area. My first wife and I divorced. Shortly thereafter I met and married my wonderful wife Michelle. Between us we have 5 children and 7 grandchildren; they are all in the Mid-West. Michelle and I moved to Cape Coral, Florida in 1987 and moved the business with us. That was probably the best decision we have ever made. We love it here.
Unfortunately, I won't be making the reunion. The committee has done an outstanding job of putting this book of memories together. Thank you. |

Keep laughing!
Well, I gave up my high school dream of becoming an actress (despite my triumphant performances as a Chinese marriage broker and a Russian countess in Players) to become—what else—an elementary school teacher. A Master’s Degree in counseling failed to get me out of the classroom, so after about 14 years, it was a choice between another year of teaching or my sanity. I chose the latter, going into publishing and eventually becoming managing editor of a trade magazine. Recently I semi-retired, though I still write for the magazine part time at home and do a little freelance writing as well. I live in the city near the lake, love to play bridge and tennis, have wonderful friends and family, and am enjoying life. There were some good times in high school, but this stage of life has much less anxiety!

Still working on wisdom
After Senn I went to Washington University (St.Louis, MO) to study art but became frustrated with it and switched to liberal arts. I could not really afford to stay there but I was lucky and got a full scholarship after the first year and so was able to finish in 1964 with a degree in Sociology. After graduation, when offered a fellowship and stipend, I went to graduate school, earning an MA in Sociology in 1966 from WU. For five years after that I did research in a planning agency, moonlighted by teaching at the University of Missouri and then took a job running an associate degree program at the Community Colleges in St. Louis.
Thanks to everyone in Chicago who did all the hard work on the reunion weekend. I, for one, am very appreciative!
When I was 29 I married John Dubinsky from St. Louis and in the next 8 years we had three children. Anne was born in 1974, Eleanor in 1976 and Frank in 1979. Anne is now married and lives in Marin County, in Fairfax, CA, with husband and 2 children. She works for the West Region of the National Park Service as an MBA in the concessions program. Eleanor (a performance artist) and Frank (developing affordable housing in Manhattan and Brooklyn) live in New York. John and I live in St. Louis from mid October until late May and in Truro, MA from late May to mid October. I took a leave of absence from the St. Louis Community Colleges in 1978 and never went back to teaching and administration or to Sociology. In 1984 I returned to Art School at Washington University. At first I took undergrad classes and later enrolled in grad school and finished an MFA in 1990. I set up a studio and now make art and show my work. I have a website at www.yddstudio.com Eight years ago John and I built a beach house in Massachusetts (Cape Cod is where we went with the kids in the summer when it became very hot in St. Louis) and now we spend long summers there. I'll be coming to the reunion from there. Life seems calmer and freer while I get older and older. If I have any regrets, its that I didn't keep up with old friends more and its in that spirit that I very much look forward to the reunion! |
